Unfortunately, there is still no way to reverse macular degeneration. But there are treatments available to slow down the progression of the disease depending on the type of AMD you are experiencing. To discuss all the risks and limitations of macular degeneration management, contact your doctor at Pinnacle Eye Group of Lambertville.
There are two basic types of age-related macular degeneration, dry and wet:
Dry AMD: Treatment for dry macular degeneration begins with annual routine eye examinations. This is especially important after age 60. Our goal is to detect signs of AMD as soon as possible. Early detection allows for prompt intervention with a prescribed mix of powerful supplements that have been proven to slow down the progression of the disease.
Wet AMD: Wet macular degeneration can be treated in a number of ways including laser eye surgery, injected light-activated dyes (circulatory system), or drugs injected into the eye to inhibit the growth of abnormal blood vessels.
Macular degeneration management in Lambertville never comes with the guarantee that the disease can be reversed, or that the treatment will not need to be repeated in the future. AMD is a sobering reminder to monitor your eye health because once vision is lost, it can rarely be restored.
Age-related macular degeneration is a hereditary eye disease, and one of the leading causes of blindness in adults over 60. The ocular disease cannot be cured but there are preventative measures and treatments available when detected early.
